What is an Independent Prescriber?
A pharmacist that has undergone additional training in clinical assessment and prescribing. Within their clinical competence, they can assess your health, diagnose and make decisions about managing your condition, including prescribing medication.
The NHS Pharmacy First Scotland Plus service represents a significant advancement in the role of community pharmacies. By building upon the existing NHS Pharmacy First Scotland service (previously the minor ailments service), this service expands the scope of minor ailments and common conditions that our pharmacists can effectively assess and treat.
Within McPhersons, we take pride in our Independent Prescribing Pharmacist who has undergone extensive additional training and obtained the necessary qualifications to provide extended prescribing abilities. This additional expertise enables them to provide comprehensive care and support in managing specific common conditions.
Our Independent Prescribing Pharmacist has the skills and knowledge to consult, diagnose, and when necessary, prescribe from a wider
range of medicines for specific common conditions.
Prescribing pharmacists enhance access to services, alleviate burdens on other NHS providers, and promote the appropriate use of NHS resources.
When seeking advice for a minor ailment or common condition, in cases where symptoms require attention beyond the standard Pharmacy First Service, rather than referring you to another healthcare setting, our team may recommend a consultation with our prescribing pharmacist.
Please note that the range of conditions each prescriber can address may vary, as does the availability of our prescribing pharmacist. We encourage you to consult with our team, who can advise on the availability of our prescriber on specific days.
